SPIRO
The scene opens on a wake, a recurring ritual in many places around the world: friends, relatives and acquaintances of the deceased together in the same place for long hours, to say goodbye and console each other. SPIRO reveals personalities, relationships and fears around death, through the composition of sounds, movements and images in the form of tableau vivants. With a dreamlike taste, singing is the core of the performance – as it is a language closely linked to funeral rituals – while the stage actions are performed in a circular space in which the audience is immersed, as part of the wake.
An ironic, poetic, touching wake.
Five characters accompany the audience on a journey through the inexpressible and the ephemeral, gradually revealing human strengths and weaknesses in the face of death.
The artistic research behind the performance was born from a study of funeral rituals around the world, from field research on cemetery architecture in Italy and Brazil, and finally from a
multidisciplinary confrontation with medical personnel, bioethicists, anthropologists and philosophers, with the aim of bringing the artistic work to focus on universal traits of the experience
of limits and exploring the experience of death as tragic, comic, poetic and absurd.
